The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will have a mobile Disaster Recovery Center located at the City parking lot on Nevin Avenue between 24th and 25th Street, through Wednesday March 1. It will be open from 8am to 6pm each day. The purpose of the Disaster Recovery Center is to assist residents that experienced damage during the December 2022 and January 2023 winter storms. Thank you to Contra Costa County for publicizing this information in English and Spanish, and to City staff who have promoted this event through social media and our City marquee located on Macdonald Avenue. If the community has any questions, please feel free to call the City Manager’s Office at 510-620-6512

Happy Black History Month; an important time to commemorate the historical people and events of the African Diaspora. It is also a time to celebrate the beauty and strength of Black people and commit to the struggle for Black liberation. We must continue to fight anti-Blackness as is it shows up in our community and world.

Last night, Richmond City Council was scheduled to receive an update on Measure U Fiscal Estimates (the second part of Item K3).

At the request of "the business community", Mayor Butt decided to continue the fiscal estimate update until January. I made a motion to overrule him but it was unsuccessful. 

Contrary to Mayor Butt’s assertion that this decision was made in support of the business community, I believe it was an attempt to stifle publication of real information about Measure U. The intention of this item was to update the public on relevant data and details of the implementation of the new business tax structure. By continuing this item, it means people have to wait to hear the detail of the fiscal estimates that our City Staff have been working hard to gather. 

On Tuesday, June 15th the Richmond City Council voted to support the Reimagine Public Safety Task Force’s recommendations to increase public safety by: 

• Creating 500 youth jobs in the Youth Works program
• Adding 8 additional peacemakers to prevent gun violence through the Office of Neighborhood Safety
• Funding a program where unhoused residents can gain job skills while improving conditions in their own communities and 
• Starting a mental health crisis team to respond to some calls now taken by police 

For more detail on the Task Force proposals, check out this video of presentation from my Cafecito Con Claudia on May 15. We are one step closer to making all of this a reality, which will be a huge achievement. These programs will make Richmond safer for everyone.

El martes 15 de junio, el Concejo Municipal de Richmond votó a favor de apoyar las recomendaciones del Grupo de Trabajo Reimaginar la Seguridad Pública para aumentar la seguridad pública al:

• Crear  500 puestos de trabajo para jóvenes en el programa Youth Works
• Añadir 8 pacificadores adicionales para prevenir la violencia armada a través de la Oficina de Seguridad Vecinal
• Financiar un programa donde los residentes sin vivienda puedan adquirir habilidades laborales mientras mejoran las condiciones en sus propias comunidades y
• Iniciar un equipo de crisis de salud mental para responder a algunas llamadas que ahora recibe la policía

Para más información sobre las propuestas del grupo de trabajo, mire este video de presentación de mi Cafecito Con Claudia en 5 de Junio. Estamos un paso más cerca de hacer realidad todo esto, lo que será un gran logro. Estos programas harán que Richmond sea más seguro para todos.

Following a lengthy and at times contentious planning process regarding the Safe Park Pilot Program, the direction of this project shifted significantly on Tue. Mar. 16.

On Tuesday March 16, Councilmember Eduardo Martinez and I will be proposing a Council vote to reconsider the Safe Parking Program Pilot. I wanted to take this opportunity to notify my district as to the reasons I will be taking this direction.
