Buenas noches  Good evening. 

Residentes y votantes del distrito 6. Gracias. District 6  Voters: thank you. You have trusted me with this position. 

Thank you to the Volunteers. You gave your precious time, your beautiful talents and money to support this campaign, even in the year of a pandemic. This kind of grassroots campaign of regular people making extraordinary commitments is what creates the possibility of a democracy free of corporate rule. 

Thank you to the Richmond Progressive Alliance and the many organizations who supported us. Finally, a special thank you to my family - my husband Eli Moore who has supported my career every step of the way and my two kids Antonio and Alicia. I love you and thank you. 

I wish the best to former council members Jael Myrick and Ben Choi and thank you for your commitment to Richmond. 

These are hard times. As of last week, Richmond had 44 Covid deaths and over 7,000 Covid cases.

Our neighbors are struggling without enough to pay their rent or mortgages, even food. There are hundreds if not thousands of people living in a car, a tent, or less. Families and children. People with jobs and many without.  The official count two months ago was that 5,000 people are unemployed in our city. Our small businesses are having a hard time keeping their doors open. 

And yet we see large corporations enjoying huge profits and receiving most of the financial support from the federal government. This must stop.

The climate crisis is a heavy reality. There were so many fires across the state and the air was so bad that we had to stay locked in our homes. Homeless people, essential workers, and others had no choice but to breathe unsafe air. But this is nothing new in Richmond. The fossil fuel industry here has hit our community hard, for generations. Our health demands strong environmental regulations and a transition to a healthy and sustainable economy. This is about survival. 

In the November election, Richmond voters said they want progressive government and a city that puts people first and provides what's needed to those who need it the most. We stand for  living wages and labor rights. Our job is to support those hardest hit by the pandemic. We want justice for our Black and Brown brothers and sisters. 

Richmond voters said they want a more progressive business tax policy. 72% of you voted for Measure U. And you supported the statewide Proposition 15, the Tax on Commercial and Industrial Properties, with over 70% of your votes. It’s clear Richmond wants corporations and large landlord businesses to pay their fair share. 

A majority of Richmond voters also supported California Proposition 21, the rent control initiative, which didn’t pass statewide. With these results, Richmond voters sent a clear message to city officials, the people of Richmond want to protect tenants and preserve rent control.

I will support a budget that represents community values ​​and preserves services that uplift our community and provides more opportunities for our youth to thrive. 

I am committed to work hard with all of you to make this happen. It is possible to have an effective and responsible government that is truly accountable to all Richmond residents, especially those facing great hardships and crisis. Together, we are building a brighter and more equitable future. We are building a Richmond for All.  Thank you 

La Ceremonia Como Nuevos Miembros del Concejo, 12 de Enero, 2021

Buenas noches residentes y votantes del distrito 6 gracias. Confiaron en mi para estar en este puesto hoy. 

Gracias a los voluntarios que creyeron en mi campaña y me apoyaron. Con su apoyo seguimos creando una democracia del pueblo y para el pueblo. 

Gracias a la alianza progresista de Richmond y a todas las organizaciones. Y a mi familia mi esposo y a mis hijos su apoyo fue fundamental. 

Son tiempos difíciles, 44 muertes y más de 7,000 casos de covid en Richmond. Nuestra gente está sufriendo sin tener suficiente para pagar el alquiler o la hipoteca e incluso comida. Cientos de personas sin un techo donde vivir. Familias con niños. Gente con o sin trabajo. 5,000 personas en Richmond desempleadas. Nuestros pequeños negocios luchan por mantener sus puertas abiertas. 

Mientras tanto, grandes corporaciones cada vez más ricas y recibiendo la mayoría de beneficios del gobierno. Esto tiene que parar. 

Estamos viviendo una crisis climática con incendios forestales en el estado. La calidad del aire era muy mala, así que tuvimos que quedarnos encerrados en nuestras casas. Pero esto no es nuevo para la gente en Richmond. La industria petrolera ha venido contaminando el aire por generaciones.  Nuestra salud demanda estrictas regulaciones ambientales y una economía sustentable que garantice la vida de las nuevas generaciones. 

En las elecciones de noviembre los votantes de Richmond decidieron por un gobierno progresista y una ciudad que se preocupe por la gente y provea a los más necesitados. Apoyamos un pago digno y derechos laborales. Nuestro trabajo es apoyar a los más afectados por la pandemia. Queremos justicia para nuestros hermanos y hermanas afroamericanos e inmigrantes.

La gente en Richmond quieren un impuesto de negocios progresista y por eso apoyaron la medida U. Así como también apoyaron la proposición 15 impuestos en propiedades comerciales e industriales. Con estos resultados quedó claro que la gente en Richmond quiere que las corporaciones y los grandes negocios de alquiler paguen lo justo. 

También apoyaron la proposición 21 control del alquiler enviando un mensaje a los líderes de la ciudad que la gente en Richmond quiere proteger inquilinos y preservar el control de alquiler. 

Apoyaré un presupuesto que represente nuestros valores y que dé más oportunidades a nuestros jóvenes. 

Estoy comprometida a trabajar con todos ustedes para que tengamos un gobierno que sea responsable a los residentes especialmente a los que lo necesitan más. Juntos estamos construyendo un futuro con más equidad  y un Richmond para todos. Gracias.

We Did It!

With most of the votes counted, it looks like I will have the honor of serving as your next City Councilmember. It is a task that I will take on with excitement, resolve, and humility. 

We have so much work together to do as a City and as a community. We are facing a pandemic that is affecting all of us, but that has devastated some of us. We are in the midst of an economic downturn that will take years to get out of. And we have a long road ahead in ensuring racial equity, especially for Richmond’s Black residents.

But we will face these challenges in the same way we ran our campaign -- by uniting around our collective vision of a “Richmond for All.” By bringing community organizations and ordinary residents together to work in solidarity and mutuality. And by being guided by our values of caring, community and cooperation, and of honesty and open communication. 

This victory does not belong to me, a single candidate. Nor does it belong to the hundreds of volunteers who I thank from the bottom of my heart for their tireless work to knock on doors, call neighbors, hand-write postcards, etc. This victory belongs to the broader movement of community organizations, activists, workers, and residents who share our vision of a city where we can all thrive and belong, especially those who are most marginalized. I invite you to both work with me and hold me accountable to this vision in the years ahead.

I want to particularly thank the people who have supported my campaign with thousands of hours of volunteer time, and to the hundreds of Richmond residents who have donated funds. This campaign was truly “corporate-free and people powered,” and it again showed how grassroots movements can unite to overcome powerful political interests.

Finally, I also want to acknowledge Vinay Pimple and Ms. Dandie, who were also running in District 6. Being a City Council candidate takes a lot of work and courage. When people run with good intent as they did, the exchange of ideas makes our democracy stronger.

Lo Logramos!

Con la mayoría de los votos ya contados, parece que tendré el honor de servir como su próximo Concejal de la Ciudad. Es una tarea que asumiré con ilusión, determinación y humildad.

Tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer juntos como ciudad y como comunidad. Nos enfrentamos a una pandemia que nos está afectando a todos, pero que ha devastado mas a algunos. Estamos en medio de una recesión económica de la que tomará años salir. Y tenemos un largo camino por delante para garantizar la equidad racial, especialmente para los residentes AfroAmericanos de Richmond.

Pero enfrentaremos estos desafíos de la misma manera que llevamos a cabo nuestra campaña: uniéndonos en torno a nuestra visión colectiva de un "Richmond para todos". Uniendo organizaciones comunitarias y residentes para trabajar en solidaridad y reciprocidad. Y guiándonos por nuestros valores de solidaridad, comunidad y cooperación, honestidad y comunicación abierta.

Esta victoria no pertenece a un solo candidato. Tampoco es de los cientos de voluntarios a los que agradezco desde el fondo de mi corazón su incansable trabajo de tocar puertas, llamar a vecinos, escribir postales, etc. Esta victoria pertenece al movimiento más amplio de organizaciones comunitarias, activistas, trabajadores y residentes que comparten nuestra visión de una ciudad donde todos podamos prosperar y pertenecer, especialmente aquellos que están más marginados. Los invito a que trabajen conmigo y me hagan responsable de esta visión en los años venideros.

Quiero agradecer particularmente a las personas que han apoyado mi campaña con miles de horas de tiempo voluntario y a los cientos de residentes de Richmond que han donado fondos. Esta campaña fue verdaderamente “libre de corporaciones y potenciada por las personas”, y nuevamente mostró cómo los movimientos de base pueden unirse para vencer intereses políticos poderosos.

Finalmente, también quiero agradecer a Vinay Pimple y a Ms. Dandie, quienes también se postularon en el Distrito 6. Ser candidato al Concejo Municipal requiere mucho trabajo y coraje, pero cuando la gente se postula con buenas intenciones, el intercambio de ideas hace que nuestra democracia más fuerte.

Claudia Jiménez: A Community Leader You Can Trust.

Claudia Jiménez is a proven community leader in Richmond and Contra Costa County. She actively supports the community’s interests over corporate interests and her priorities are clear: housing is a right, healthcare for all should be accessible and affordable, and all citizens should be able to access essential city services. Richmond must have a healthier environment for all of us. 

Now more than ever, Richmond needs a leader like Claudia who will promote bold policies that benefit those most impacted by the effects of the COVID19 pandemic.  Poverty and racism have plagued Richmond for decades with job losses, homelessness, pollution and a lack of access to health care. Now, Claudia and help lead a change.

Claudia believes that housing is a human right and that Richmond should have housing policies that protect families and do not leave anyone on the street. She is an advocate for healthcare workers and those who work in caring for people in their homes.

Claudia is an experienced community organizer, known for building and facilitating coalitions that have championed policies such as the successful “Invest in People, Not Prisons” campaign. She can organize those same coalitions to fight to redistribute money now allocated to harmful institutions and reinvest it in essential city services. That change will protect Richmond and make the community stronger. 

On November 3, 2020, vote for Claudia Jiménez to represent District 6 on the city council where she will work to ensure Richmond for All. 

Una Líder comunitaria en la que podemos confiar

Claudia Jiménez es una líder comunitaria con experiencia de trabajar con la  comunidad de Richmond y el Condado de  Contra Costa. Ella apoya activamente los intereses de la comunidad por encima de los intereses corporativos y sus prioridades son claras: la vivienda es un derecho, la atención médica para todos debe ser accesible y asequible, y todos los ciudadanos deben poder acceder a los servicios esenciales de la ciudad. Richmond debe tener un medio ambiente más saludable para todos.

Ahora más que nunca, Richmond necesita una líder como Claudia que promueva políticas audaces que beneficien a los más afectados por los efectos de la pandemia COVID19. Claudia es una organizadora comunitaria con experiencia, conocida por construir y facilitar coaliciones que han defendido políticas como la exitosa campaña “Invertir en las personas, no en las cárceles”. Ella puede organizar esas mismas coaliciones para luchar por la redistribución de dinero que en este momento está asignado a instituciones dañinas y reinvertirlo en servicios esenciales de la ciudad. Ese cambio protegerá a Richmond y fortalecerá a la comunidad.

About Claudia

Claudia has been a resident of Richmond, California for over a decade where she has been an active and beloved member of her community. Claudia has a history of building coalitions between unions, community organizations, political leadership, philanthropy, and the private sector. Claudia has a passion for and a strong commitment to creating spaces for everyone to participate in making decisions that benefit the Richmond community as a whole. For the last ten years, Claudia has been actively involved with Richmond and Contra Costa communities in campaigns and efforts to ensure access to health, jobs, housing and services, especially for those most impacted by discrimination based on race, ethnicity, citizenship status, and other forms of social and economic exclusion or displacement. 

Together with other Richmond neighborhood parents, Claudia was instrumental in helping to rebuild the Solano Playlot, a vital neighborhood park serving north and eastern Richmond families. She joined other leaders in the immigrant community to negotiate policies with the Richmond police department benefitting undocumented immigrants who live in Richmond. As a homeowner, she advocated for residents’ rights to be able to stay and thrive in Richmond. She was one of the proponents of the Rent Control ballot initiative that was passed overwhelmingly by Richmond voters in 2016.

As a deeply experienced community organizer, she has led several campaigns in Richmond and Contra Costa County, including the “Invest in People not Prison” campaign in collaboration with the Safe Return Project and CCISCO. That campaign forged an alliance of African American and immigrant community leaders in Contra Costa to end the sheriff’s cooperation with the ICE Secure Communities program and redirected $5.2 million in state realignment funds toward services for people in Contra Costa County returning home from incarceration.

Originally from Colombia, Claudia is a trained architect who has worked to design and build affordable housing and watershed management projects in Colombia. She received her Master’s degree in Environmental Planning from UC Berkeley. She lives in District 6 of Richmond with her husband and two children.

Por más de una década Claudia Jiménez ha vivido en Richmond, donde se ha convertido en un miembro activo y valorado de la comunidad. Claudia tiene un largo historial ayudando a formar coaliciones entre sindicatos, organizaciones comunitarias, organizaciones políticas, organizaciones filantrópicas y el sector privado, con el fin de trabajar en conjunto. Claudia posee el compromiso y entusiasmo necesarios para poder crear espacios de participación para todos a la hora de tomar decisiones que beneficien a toda la comunidad de Richmond. Durante los últimos diez años, Claudia se ha involucrado activamente en campañas e iniciativas en las comunidades de Richmond y del condado de Contra Costa para garantizar el acceso a la salud, empleos, vivienda y servicios para aquellos sectores más impactados por la discriminación por raza, etnia, estatus migratorio y otras formas de exclusión social y económica.

 Junto a otros padres de su vecindario en Richmond, Claudia tuvo una participación fundamental en el esfuerzo para reconstruir el Parque de Juegos Solano, un parque vecinal que sirve a las familias del norte y este de Richmond. Ella también colaboró con otros líderes de la comunidad inmigrante para negociar nuevas políticas con el departamento de policía de Richmond que benefician a los inmigrantes indocumentados residentes en Richmond. Como dueña de casa, ella defendió los derechos de todos los residentes a permanecer y prosperar en Richmond. Ella fue una de las proponentes de la iniciativa electoral de Control de Renta que fue aprobada por un margen abrumador por los votantes de Richmond en 2016.

Como organizadora comunitaria de amplia experiencia, ella ha dirigido varias campañas en Richmond y en el condado de Contra Costa, incluyendo la iniciativa “Invirtamos en la gente, No en las prisiones”, en colaboración con el Safe Return Project y CCISCO.
