Statement on Recent ICE Raids in Los Angeles
I condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids taking place in Los Angeles and across California. What is happening is not only morally reprehensible—it is legally indefensible.
Being undocumented in the United States is not a crime. Yet ICE continues to operate with impunity, violating the rights and due process of immigrants through unlawful arrests and intimidation tactics that traumatize families and communities.
As an immigrant myself, I know firsthand the fear and uncertainty that so many in our communities live with. I have worked closely with immigrant families in Richmond and throughout Contra Costa County, and I’ve seen the heartbreak caused by detention and deportation. It tears families apart and leaves deep scars that last for generations.
Richmond stands firmly with our immigrant neighbors in Los Angeles and everywhere. As a sanctuary city, we remain committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all who call Richmond home. We will not sit silently while ICE wages a campaign of fear and dehumanization.
As your councilmember, I will continue to speak out, organize, and fight to keep our community whole. I want every immigrant resident in our city to know: you are not alone. I see you, I stand with you, and I will keep working to protect you and your families.
We love our community, and we take care of each other. That is what makes Richmond strong. In the face of fear, we respond with compassion. In the face of division, we show unity. Our immigrant neighbors are part of the heart of this city, and we will continue to stand together, to support one another, and to build a community where everyone feels safe, seen, and valued.
We must continue to lead with power and not panic. All people, regardless of their immigration status, are protected by the Constitution. It is important that we learn our rights so that we can protect ourselves and our families.
If you are approached by an ICE officer at home, you have the right to remain silent as well as the right to not open the door. Without a valid warrant signed by a judge, ICE officers have no legal authority to enter your home.
If you are in public, you also have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer any questions from an ICE officer, and you have the right not to share any information about your immigration status. You also have the right to ask if you are being legally detained. If ICE officers do not have a warrant AND they do not have any evidence that you are a non-citizen, they may not legally detain you.
Similarly, if you are stopped by an ICE officer in a vehicle, every person in the vehicle has the right to remain silent. ICE legally cannot search your vehicle unless they have probable cause that you are a non-citizen or with a warrant.
If you are arrested, you have the right not to sign any documents before speaking to an attorney who can explain what you are signing. You also have the right to make a phone call to contact a family member, emergency contact, attorney, or other legal resource.
