But Attacks Will Start Soon

While I'm grateful for my endorsements, I also expect there will be attacks on my campaign. I'm pretty sure what story they will tell.  So let me tell it to you first.

To be clear, I don't think either of the other District 6 candidates (Vinay Pimple and Ms. Dandie) will be sending negative ads. Any attack ads about me will likely be paid for by political action committees (PACs). These PACs may be funded by business associations, which may not like my support of rent control and stronger environmental protections, and maybe even the police union, which might disagree with my plans to reimagine public safety by investing in programs beyond traditional policing. When you get any political ads (including my own), please look for the small print required by law which tells you who spent thousands of dollars to send them.

As background, I was one of several leaders in the campaign for rent control in 2016.  When Richmond voters passed the measure with over 60% support, some opponents of rent control, including Mayor Tom Butt, were really angry. My husband, Eli Moore, is a researcher who has been repeatedly attacked by Tom Butt, most recently because Eli said the new ferry service should be usable by low-income people as well as business commuters.

In 2017 my family and I rented out our house while we lived in my native Colombia for two years. The rent control law I helped pass in 2016 requires all Richmond rental properties be registered with the city within 30 days, and we were late doing that. This, I admit, was a mistake, and it opened me up to criticism that I think I am "above the law" or I think that the rent control rules don't apply to me. But I want you to know this is not and was never the case. My husband and I were 60 days late in registering the property, we were embarrassed by it, but in all other ways we complied with the rent control law.

Things got crazy from there. As some of you may remember, when the Mayor called us out in his email forum, he included the address of our house (a form of internet bullying sometimes called "doxxing"), which brought people to the front yard and terrified our renters. The Mayor actually emailed Eli's employer (at the time, the Haas Institute at UC Berkeley) and requested that they "verify" his story about our rental. The ACLU of Northern California was concerned that the Mayor was using his power as an elected official to harass his political opponents, and filed a Public Records Act to get access to the Mayor's emails about us. In one released email Butt explained that he emailed Eli's bosses because the Haas Institute should “know what a hypocrite Moore is. Perhaps they will reassign him off the Richmond beat.”

It went on and on from there, and it's coming up again this year.

Si bien estoy agradecida por los respaldos, también espero que hayan ataques a mi campaña y estoy segura de lo que dirán. Déjame contártelo primero.

No creo que ninguno de los otros candidatos que están corriendo en el Distrito 6 (Vinay Pimple y Miss Dandie) envíe anuncios negativos, pero anticipó que los anuncios de ataque sobre mí, probablemente serán pagados por los comités de acción política (PAC). Estos pueden ser financiados por asociaciones comerciales, a quienes puede que no les gusta mi apoyo al control de la renta y tampoco protecciones ambientales más fuertes, y también puede que incluso el sindicato de la policía, que puede estar en desacuerdo con mi posición sobre reimaginar la seguridad pública ( invirtiendo en programas más allá de la policía tradicional.). Cuando reciba anuncios políticos (incluido el mío), busqué la letra pequeña requerida por la ley que le dice quién pagó por estos mensajes. 

Como antecedente, fui una de las líderes en la campaña por el control de la renta en 2016.
